Information for Walkers

Walkers, You're Welcome

We may be "Running Events" but there are many participants at our events who come along to walk the course. In fact, a vibrant community of fellow walkers awaits at all distances. Some are super-competitive (and impressively fast!) but most are just there to enjoy the vibe and tick off their own personal fitness goals. So if you want to walk the course, you can be sure you won't be alone.

Before registering in the Competitive Walk or Hybrid Run/Walk, check out the info below on rules and etiquette ...

SIGNING UP

WALKING OPTIONS AT SPECIFIC EVENTS

REGISTERING AS A WALKER

During the normal registration process when purchasing a ticket to one of our events, you'll be prompted to answer the "Event Option" question if the event/distance has a walking category. Select either "Competitive Walk" or "Hybrid Run/Walk" to be registered in one of the two walking categories (see ahead for how to choose between them).

If you missed this question during your initial ticket purchase but want to revisit you answer now (either to join a walking option or to switch to the open/run) then you can do this by changing your answer on your Ticket Dashboard. For help with this, check out the Make Changes section of this page.

COMPETITIVE OR HYBRID?

Which should i choose?

If you are a little more serious about your walking, intend to only walk the entire course and you understand clearly the rules for competitive walking … select the Competitive Walk option. You must also select this option if you intend to compete for walking awards.

If you plan to mostly walk, but want to be able to jog or run from time-to-time … even if it is only for a short distance … select the Hybrid Run/Walk option. Hybrids should start at the back of the main runners start.

Important! A seperate category of results will be produced for the Competitive Walk which only lists those taking that option. Hybrid run/walkers will only be listed amongst the general results.

All Must Be Satisfied ...

REGISTERING

You must be registered in the Competitive Walk - by recording Competitive Walk as your answer to the "Race Option" question - prior to starting the event.

STARTING

You must start on the designated Competitive Walk starting signal, which is normally 3 minutes after the runners set off.

WALKING

You must walk at all times whilst participating in the event and not run or jog at any time. See below for walking rules explained.

COMPETITIVE WALKING RULES

ENSURE YOU COMPLY WITH THESE RULES THROUGHOUT THE RACE

Ground Contact Rule

You must walk in such a way that - to the naked eye - one foot is in contact with the ground at all times.

Straight Knee Rule

The advancing (front) leg must be straight at all times from first contact with the ground until in the vertical upright position (i.e. as it passes under the body).

FORCE

MAJEURE

The above rules notwithstanding, Running Events want to make it clear that the walking category is not officially judged and the integrity of the competition relies upon the participants themselves to know and understand the rules and compete within them.
Experienced race walkers themselves will acknowledge that the rules as stated above are made for walking competitions that take place on a flat surface and that the undulating terrain present in some of our events may make exact compliance at all times difficult or even unrealistic.
Participants are reminded that - per the Participation and Competition Rules which apply to all competitors (walkers included) - in any dispute, the Race Director's decision shall be final.
